“Morning sickness is like a light switch, and you know how kids love to play with light switches” – Anon
‘Morning’ sickness can happen at any time of the day, and occurs in 50 – 80% of all pregnancies, most commonly between week 6 and week 16, and at its most intense between the 8th and 12th week.
For the most unfortunate, nausea and vomiting can last right through to birth.
Morning sickness is not damaging to your pregnancy except in the rare instances when prolonged vomiting can lead to dehydration. This is called hyperemesis gravidarum and may require hospitalization to receive intravenous fluids.
“It may not be dangerous, but it’s blooming horrible!”
Quite. Morning sickness can really get in the way of your life and make the joyous experience of pregnancy something else completely. It’s particularly difficult if you don’t want your workplace to know that you’re pregnant.

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for relieving nausea and vomiting in a number of scientific studies.
- A study published in the December 2009 investigated the effects of acupuncture on severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. 97% of the women treated with acupuncture showed significant improvements after 7 days, whereas only 47% benefited from drug treatment luminal.
- In a 2004 study that compared acupuncture, acupressure and a placebo, determined that 90 percent of the patients responded well to acupuncture, whereas 63.6 percent responded to acupressure and 12.5 percent found relief from a placebo
Our morning sickness treatment
To get absolutely the best results for you, we combine acupuncture treatment with teaching you acupressure techniques to use between treatments. We also use special needles that are very tiny (less than a millimetre long) that can be left painlessly in the skin between appointments to keep the sickness-beating effect going. We will also use our years of experience with other women to advise you on diet to help combat that lousy feeling.
