How did I strain my back?
It may not take very much to strain or “put your back out”, anything from overstretching to lifting something in an incorrect way may do it. However once you have strained your back, your muscles can enter a vicious cycle of pain and tension that needs to be broken!
Why does it keep happening?
Tension build-up is a major culprit in the injury of soft tissues in the body. Tension builds up when we use our body (in both normal day-to-day life as well as during exercise) in a ‘tense’ way.
Are you saying I’m tense?
Well, in a word, yes! People often perform actions whilst over-using their muscles and often are not even aware that they are over-using them. Over time, a pattern of tension builds into the way they move and chronically tense muscles are simple more likely to get injured.
How can you help me release this tension?
Physical tension can be released through massage therapy and acupuncture, but you also need to retrain yourself and learn new ways of moving so that you do not live in way that builds up tension habitually. We can provide lessons on Eastern Body Movement alongside a Tui Na or acupuncture session and also can include sessions on breath retraining and mindfulness training to help you approach the emotional and mental tension that also builds up and contributes to muscle injury.
