Spot the difference
There are many different kinds of acne, aka spots or pustules, and the treatment for each is somewhat different. Although some are simpler to treat than others, acne generally responds very favourable to the appropriate treatment. Pigmentation and scarring can be treated once the spots and inflammation have gone. You can read more about our treatments, which include acupuncture & herbal medicine, below.
Common or ‘Teenage’ acne
This can range from mild to extremely severe and disfiguring, with psychological as well as physical consequences. This type of acne is frequently painful and there may be blackheads as well as pustules and cysts.
Herbal medicine is the main treatment along with natural herbal skin cream. Avoiding certain foods as part of a dietary therapy programme is also usually helpful. Acupuncture can also be offered and is very useful with some cases of teenage acne.
Mature female acne and Hormonal acne
This is late onset acne, or acne that has never gone away. The spots come up or get worse around period time, and there are often other symptoms as well, like PMT/PMS. May be part of PCOS/PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Disease). For some people the spots are hard nodules or cyst-like and take a long time to go away, leaving pigmented areas or scars when they do.
Treatment is with acupuncture to regulate hormonal cycles, herbal medicine to clear the spots and dietary therapy to address the underlying cause. Breathing, Mindfulness meditation and stress reduction techniques will often form part of an overall treatment plan designed to get you feeling and looking better as quickly as possible.
